Why Robotic Mowers Are Taking Off in Australia
Why Robotic Lawn Mowers Are Taking Off in Australia
Most people in Australia have heard of robotic lawn mowers, but many still aren’t sure if they really work. The technology is still new here, and there are a few common misunderstandings. I hear things like:
“They can’t handle slopes”
“They get stuck at driveways”
“They can’t mow separate lawn areas”
“They just don’t work in Australian conditions”
The reality is different. Today’s robotic mowers can manage complex blocks, slopes, paddocks, and even commercial sites. When set up correctly, they deliver lawns that look healthier, thicker, greener and more consistent all year round.
Why People Choose Robotic Mowing
The big reason is time. Traditional mowing takes up evenings and weekends. Many people would rather spend that time with family, relaxing or travelling.
I also meet homeowners who are getting older and want their property to stay beautiful without having to push a mower. Others want to reduce the cost of hiring someone every week. Some simply want consistency. A robotic mower maintains the lawn every day, not every 7 to 14 days.
Robot Mowers Australia Difference: Local Support
You can buy many of the same mower models that we sell elsewhere online. The difference with Robot Mowers Australia is support. When you buy from us, you get installation advice, setup help and local after sales service. You speak to real staff in Australia, not an offshore call centre or a chatbot.
That support matters because a great robotic mowing experience comes down to proper setup and tuning. We guide you through that.
Where Robotic Mowers Work Best
They work best on lawns with regular maintenance habits. Grass that is kept short stays healthier. The mower trims little and often which encourages thicker growth and reduces weeds.
Where They Do Not Work as Well
If you have several large gum trees dropping sticks constantly, you will need to pick up debris for the mower to run well. Also, very steep slopes can be a challenge, especially if there’s no flat section at the bottom for turning.
Real Installations in NSW
Prestige Estate – Arcadia, North Western Sydney
A luxury property with 10 acres of lawns, gardens and paddocks. The owner wanted the grounds to match the quality of the home. We installed six robotic mowers:
- 1 Mammotion Luba 5000X for a steep area
- 5 Kress RTKn mowers (KR236, KR174 and KR172 models) across flat and open lawns
These mowers run every day and maintain everything from poolside lawns to horse paddocks. The owner regularly comments on how stunning the lawns now look year round, without needing a weekly mowing crew.
Macarthur Memorial Park – South Western Sydney
A new 300 acre cemetery managed by a small team of four. They were short on time and needed help. They trialled an FJ Dynamics RM21 and were impressed by its strength and versatility. They purchased one earlier this year and it has been working reliably since. It reduced manual mowing hours and helped staff stay focused on the most important tasks onsite. A testimonial video is now live if you’d like to see their experience first hand.
Model Recommendations Based on Property Type
Typical suburban lawns
- Flat or mild slopes: Segway Navimow or Kress models
- Sloping suburban lawns: Mammotion Luba Mini
Acreage and rural blocks
- Over 8 acres, no major slopes: FJ Dynamics RM21
- Under 8 acres, no major slopes: Two Kress KR236 units working together
- Sloping acreage: Mammotion Luba 2 AWD 3000X or 5000X
Commercial sites and sports fields
- Kress KR236 or KR237
- FJ Dynamics RM21 for very large areas or high runtime needs
How Modern Navigation Works
We use RTK GPS guidance. The mower acts as a moving reference point and speaks to a fixed reference station on the property. Both receive satellite signals and talk to each other which allows accuracy to under 5 cm. This is how the mower follows clean lines and stays within set boundaries.
The Result for Most Customers
After a few weeks they notice the lawn is thicker, more even and greener. The mower trims a tiny amount each day which naturally fertilises the grass. The lawn becomes healthier simply because it is always maintained at the right height and is being cut by sharp blades.
The Future of Robotic Mowing in Australia
The technology is improving fast. We are only a few years into RTK-based systems and we’re already seeing lidar, AI and visual mapping improving performance under trees and around buildings. Labour is expensive in Australia and skilled grounds staff are in short supply. Robotic mowing will play a major role in reducing labour load, improving consistency and helping organisations meet sustainability goals.
